The question caught Den by surprise. How much should he reveal? That was a tough one. He’d already decided he didn’t want to scare her away, but he should say something to at least see if she was even close to the same thinking that was running through his mind.

“Well, you, for one.” He tried to be cool as he evaluated her response. She seemed confused. He needed to say more. To make it clearer. “I never expected to meet you, Sunny, but now that I have, I need to rethink a few things. I’d like to see where our relationship goes. That is, if you feel the same.” Now, she looked stunned. He wasn’t sure what to think. He hated it, but he had to ask. “Do you want to spend more time with me?”

“I—” She swallowed hard before going on, setting his nerves on edge. “I’d like that,” she said finally, and he could breathe again. Satisfaction spread through his body, along with relief. Except, she looked a little embarrassed, and he wasn’t sure what to think about that.

“I want you to know. This… What happened between us… It’s not a casual thing for me. I hope that doesn’t put you off.” He was laying it on the line, but his instincts were pushing him onward, even though he knew pressing his luck probably wasn’t to his best advantage right now. He’d thought he wasn’t going to rush her, but his inner cat had other ideas.

“It doesn’t,” she answered in a small voice, but he still heard it, and his heart leapt with joy. “I mean… I never thought… After my accident, I didn’t think anyone would be interested in anything long-lasting with me.”

He turned to look at her, shocked. “Are you kidding me?” The vulnerable look on her face was answer enough for him, and he felt angry on her behalf. “You’re the most desirable, decent, intelligent, and beautiful woman I’ve ever known. If anybody made you feel less than that, you tell me their name, and I’ll break their nose. Nobody has the right to make you feel bad, Sunny. Never again.”

She looked a bit surprised at his vehemence. Frankly, he was surprised at his own emotional outburst. His inner cat was running rampant over his better sense today. The little fur ball was getting him in deeper and deeper, and he only hoped it wouldn’t scare off the love of his life.

“That’s really sweet, Den, but I don’t want you to break anybody’s nose. Still, it’s kind of nice of you to offer.”

Relief coursed through him. She didn’t think he was bonkers for reacting so strongly. Thank goodness.

“I just want you to know how special you are.” He had to try again. To make his thoughts a little clearer and maybe not so insane. “I want to spend a lot more time with you, if that’s what you want too. I want to see where this thing between us goes. I have a feeling it could lead to something really special.
